Why handmade?
When I first started making vests 15 years ago my goal was to improve the quality of the fabrics and workmanship of the garments found in department stores. Clothing was being manufactured overseas and quality had diminished. This was partially a rationalization on my part —- because I loved to hunt for beautiful fabrics and match the linings and buttons myself. As a result I have over 300 different fabrics, drawers full of unusual buttons, and as a result many unique men’s and women’s vests (http://www.vestsbycharlotte.com/).
Another benefit that has developed by handmaking the vests is that I have figured out how to customize the fit to the person wearing the vest. I quickly learned that very few people fit into a standard Small, Medium, Large, or XL. Height is also an issue that determines how long the vest should be. Some of us are 5 ft. tall and some are 6 ft. 4 inches. After many returns from unhappy customers, I learned to insist on measurements. (See my article: How Do I meake Sure the Vest You Order, Fits You?— It shows how to measure! )
I now ask for a chest, waist, and length in center back , measurement. It takes extra time and trouble to take your own measurements but in the long run it pays big dividends. After receiving your measurements, I find the size pattern in the style you requested that is closest to your measurements. I measure the pattern and make adjustments.
If you are taller than the pattern indicates. I cut the pattern horizontally and add a piece of paper to lengthen the pattern.
I then personally cut out each piece, carefully noting where more or less room is needed. Marks show where changes need to be made and then the vest is assembled. I then check carefully to be sure that each finished garment has achieved the goal measurements (with a little room to spare!)
The most rewarding part of making my handmade vests is communicating with my customers about what they are looking for. Talking (or emailing) is essential! Once people let me know what they are looking for, what their needs are (job, personal, physical, and , yes— psychological) I can better help them. It might be as simple as needing four pockets because of pens, glasses, and a cell phone. It might be as complex as fitting a body that has changed because of weight loss (or gain), illness or disability.
These are the rewards that I didn’t expect when I first started making MENS and WOMENS HANDMADE VESTS!
